Best Shot

February 6, 2009

I was out and about today applying for jobs here and there when, inevitably, I was asked what brought me to Tennessee from Minnesota.

My answer, though it’s definitely more complicated than this, is always, “to be a songwriter.”

The lovely lady who asked this question of me then responded with an, “Oh, bless your heart,” then went on to tell me about her husband who moved to Tennessee in the early ’70s to be a songwriter and by the time he died a few years ago, had never had a song published.

I said, “Yeah, I know it will be hard, but you’ve gotta try, right?”

And she said, “I’ve lived here my whole life and I’ve seen a whole lotta people try.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell her, after all of that, that I’d had four songs published before I even left Minnesota.

But you know? Even if I hadn’t…

You gotta try, right?

You definitely have the right attitude. You’ve gotta try. And you’ve already had some success!
